ITINERARY

DAY 1

  • TRANSFER TO THE RINCON DE LA VIEJA HOTEL

Travel from Liberia Airport to Rincon de la Vieja volcano and national park. The journey time is about 1 hour 15 minutes. You’ll check into the Hacienda Guachipelín Lodge or similar.

    THINGS TO DO

    HACIENDA GUACHIPELIN

This place has got a really natural vibe about it. It’s set among lush gardens overflowing with exotic trees and flowers, and there’s a lookout point with 360-degree views of the Ricon de la Vieja National Park. The pool is even filled with spring-fresh water collected from the slopes of a nearby volcano. When it comes to mealtimes, there’s an open-sided restaurant that offers up buffet and à la carte menus, along with a side-order of ranchland-views. After dinner, most guests tend to retreat to the bar, where there’s often dancing to local marimba music.

    DAY 2

RINCON DE LA VIEJA – ARENAL

Today you’ll visit the Rincon de la Vieja National Park, before heading to Arenal. The volcano-come-national park is not to be missed, you’ll go horse riding through the lush forests and also have a go at ‘river tubing’. Then it’s on to Arenal where you can relax in the world-famous Tabacon hot springs – a Garden of Eden-esque spot complete with bubbling thermal waterfalls. You’ll stay at the Arenal Springs Hotel, or similar, for 2 nights.

    THINGS TO DO

    TUBING ADVENTURE

You’ll ride a horse through the lush forests of the Rincon de la Vieja and then have a go at ‘river tubing’ – imagine sitting in an oversized inflatable donut ring and then bouncing down river rapids.

    ARENAL SPRINGS HOTEL

This hotel is a great base for visiting the Arenal Volcano National Park. As you’d expect, it’s in a lovely, natural setting, surrounded by flower-filled gardens. You might even spot some colourful birds. Amongst the greenery, you’ll find a good-sized swimming pool that comes with a poolside bar and restaurant. There are two more restaurants inside the hotel, and elsewhere there’s a spa and a handful of thermal pools.

  • DAY 3

    ARENAL

Once you’ve had breakfast at the hotel, you’ll get to enjoy a full cultural tour of the Arenal region, including the Arenal volcano and the hanging bridges spanning the forest’s treetops.

    THINGS TO DO

    ARENAL CULTURAL TOUR

Enjoy a full day cultural tour of the Arenal region. The star of the show is undoubtedly Arenal volcano. With its classic cone-shaped peak laced with a necklace of cumulus cloud, this 5,357ft lava-spitting mount is arguably Costa Rica’s most famous landmark.

    ARENAL HANGING BRIDGES TOUR

Arenal’s hanging bridges are not for the faint hearted. Look out for birds as you walk through the tree tops of the rainforest.

  • DAY4
    ARENAL – SARAPIQUI

After you’ve had breakfast at the hotel, you’ll be transferred to Sarapiqui. The journey takes about 3 hours. You’ll get to go on a guided tour through the jungle – residents include sloths and Costa Rica’s famous red-eyed tree frog. While in Sarapiqui, you’ll stay at Selva Verde Lodge or similar for 1 night.

    THINGS TO DO

    SARAPIQUI RAINFOREST GUIDED WALK

This is a guided tour through the jungle – look out for sloths and Costa Rica’s famous duo of super-cute hoppers – the sleepy red-eyed tree frog that’s often found napping on big leaves, and the aptly-named Blue Jean frog who models blue tinged little legs.

    Image

    SELVA VERDE LODGE

Selva Verde is well-located for exploring the rainforest. It’s surrounded by 500 acres of jungle that’s packed with beautiful flora and fauna. The pool is centre of attention at the hotel – it’s set amongst the greenery of the hotel gardens and offers up a great place to relax after a day’s exploration. Elsewhere, there’s a dining room that overlooks the Sarapiqui River, as well as a second restaurant – La Terrazza pizzeria – with river-view seating. The bar is a chilled-out venue for after-dinner drinks.

  • DAY 5

    SARAPIQUI – TORTUGUERO

Breakfast takes place at La Quinta de Sarapiqui before heading off to take a boat over to Tortuguero. 35 kilometres of beach, backed by an interwoven network of rivers, lagoons and islands, this area on Costa Rica’s Atlantic coast is like something out of a David Attenborough documentary. It’s only accessible by boat so it’s a habitat haven for birds, monkeys, sloths and kamen crocs. After lunch, you’ll get to visit the brightly-painted town of Tortuguero and the Green Turtle Museum. While in Tortuguero, you’ll stay at the Laguna Lodge or similar for 2 nights.

    THINGS TO DO

    LA QUINTA DE SARAPIQUI

You’ll have breakfast at La Quinta de Sarapiqui eco-lodge – a tropical retreat that’s tucked away in the rainforest.

    ORTUGUERO VILLAGE

The brightly-painted town of Tortuguero has a lovely bohemian vibe and is criss-crossed by pretty canals. What’s more, it’s only accessible by boat and completely car-free, which makes for a great place to wander around.

  • DAY

    TORTUGUERO

After breakfast, you’ll get to go on a boat tour of the Tortuguero canals. Then it’s back to the hotel for lunch, after which you can enjoy some chill-out time before having dinner at the lodge.

    THINGS TO DO

    TORTUGUERO CANALS

Take in some of the waterways that criss-cross Tortuguero’s lush landscape. With dense forest edging each side of the canals, there’s usually plenty of wildlife to spot. Look out for the likes of crocodiles, river turtles, monkeys, and even the slow-moving sloths.

  • DAY 7

    TORTUGUERO – SAN JOSE

Once you’ve had breakfast at the hotel, you’ll go by boat back to the dock before driving onto San Jose for a sightseeing tour of Costa Rica’s capital. You’ll stay at Tryp Sabana Hotel or similar for 1 night.

    THINGS TO DO

    SAN JOSE CITY TOUR

This tour takes in the sights of Costa Rica’s capital city, San Jose. The city sits high between a set of mountain ranges and is the country’s undisputed nexus as more than a third of the population – 2 million people – call this metropolis home. It was colonised by the Spanish in the 16th century and you can still see colonial hangovers by way of the National Museum and the ornate National Theatre, not to mention countless churches.

  • DAY 8

    SAN JOSE – GUANACASTE

Following breakfast at the hotel, it’s then onto Guanacaste to stay at your chosen beach resort hotel. The journey time is about 4 hours 30 minutes.

  • DAY 8-14

    RIU GUANACASTE

Today you arrive at your hotel for your 7 night All inclusive stay!

Welcome to Riu Guanacaste – All Inclusive 24 hours!

The Riu Guanacaste features an attractive building in hacienda-style which has 6 stories with 6 lifts and comprises 701 stylish rooms. The beautiful pool area and hotel gardens directly join the dark-sandy beach of Matapalo. The Riu Palace Costa Rica is located right next door. The “El Poblado” street near the hotel offers facilities which are shared by both hotels: a conference center, discotheque, spa, casino, several shops and a tennis court.

The Riu Guanacaste is pulled right up against the ocean and backed by green-cloaked mountains. Fitting for Costa Rica, the hotel has a Spanish colonial look and feel – right down to stone plazas, fountains and archways. The hotel’s setting is spot on if you just want to decamp to the beach each day. But if you want to get out and about, Coco Beach – the nearest resort – is about a 20-minute taxi ride away.
