THAILAND: Bangkok, Koh Phangan & Koh Samui

Thailand is known for its incredible tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha. On this trip you will take in Bangkok, the island paradise of Koh Phangan and the cosmopolitan melting pot that is Koh Samui.

Bangkok is a thriving metropolis with a multicultural vibe that extends to all areas of the city. It excites and delights both day and night and it is truly street life at its best. Full of day markets, night markets and street food vendors, its truly buzzing 24 hours a day.

The boat-filled Chao Phraya River feeds its network of canals, flowing past the Rattanakosin royal district, home to opulent Grand Palace and its sacred Wat Phra Kaew Temple. Nearby is Wat Pho Temple with an enormous reclining Buddha and, on the opposite shore, Wat Arun Temple with its steep steps and Khmer-style spire.

Ko Pha-Ngan is fringed with delightful bays, inlets, coves and beaches. And if you side-step the full moon and half moon shenanigans, you may even find them largely deserted. The beach at the fishing village of Chalok Lam on the north shore may not be a top draw, but it’s quiet and a growing band of good dining options are clustered along the beachfront street. You can reach the small beach of Kat Khom by scooter or on foot northeast from Chalok Lam and continue hiking east over the hills to Hat Khuat (Bottle Beach), a popular choice for swimming and snorkelling; you can also get here by boat from Chalok Lam or Thong Nai Pan to the east.

For seclusion, aim for the isolated beaches on the east coast, including Than Sadet, Hat Yuan and Hat Thian. Hat Yuan is accessible by long-tail boat from Hat Rin, from where you can continue to Hat Thian and other small coves and beaches along the east coast. A smooth new road runs to lovely Than Sadet, also on the east coast, but the sense of seclusion survives. Linked by road, west coast beaches including Hat Yao, Hat Salad and Ao Mae Hat are the place for sunset views over to Ang Thong National Marine Park.

Koh Samui (Samui Island) is a cosmopolitan melting pot, attracting budget travellers staying for a a few weeks in a simple beachside bungalow, to the wealthiest holidaymakers, honeymooners or families dropping in for a week or two at one of the many luxury resort or villa on the many white sand beaches of Koh Samui. From the hustle and bustle of Chaweng Beach to the lively yet relaxed atmosphere of Lamai Beach to the timeless feel of Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village to the tropical beach paradise of Maenam, Koh Samui is unique among Thailand’s islands in maintaining a broad appeal for everyone. This helps to give the distinctive relaxed atmosphere that sets it apart.

Spend the morning sea kayaking or elephant trekking through the jungle. Visit the many temples dotted around the island. Perhaps try stand up paddle boarding or surfing and learn how to dive in the many Padi Approved diving centres and open up your mind to the incredible underwater world that surrounds Koh Samui.
